Painting roadkill demands the painting gesture of the merciless car. I turn the brute power and speed of the car into paint. My uncompromising approach results in paintings that appear abstract and rough at first sight. A closer look reveals an indication of the represented subject amidst the rawness: the delicately painted beak of the run over bird. With one sweeping streak I spray the yellow mark over the bird, mimicking the machine that paints traffic stripes. The character of the subject is in the manner of painting.

When painting a seascape on an office light box, instead of choosing the deft use of small brushes, I use a grinder. The raw motion forms detailed whitecaps. The sunset I do not paint at all: the yellow TL-light shining through suggests a glowing sundown. The atmosphere and associations connected to fluorescent lamps are in stark contrast with the romantic tradition of the painted seascape. I do not paint the 17th century Dutch light, instead I use my own contemporary version of Dutch light: the Philips tube light.

This specific work was installed on the outer wall of the Dapiran gallery building in Utrecht, resembling a neon commercial sign.
During a residency at Popp’s Packing in Detroit (US) I made the first steps towards this series of sunsets and seascapes painted on light boxes. On the streets I found a broken light box advertising a fancy car. The poster was partly torn off, exposing the tube lights and cables on the inside, creating an intriguing new composition. In the sunset/seascape works (fig  6, 7, 8) the picture and the underlying structure blend in with each other, but not without friction. I like my works to have this ambivalence that the viewer has to figure out: a seascape, yet with an ugly bare tube light showing through; a painting, but in the style of a neon box advertisement.

The right to exist of a good painting lies in the visual power of the act: this should be in balance with the subject – or contradicting it. I want the viewer to be swung to and fro between abstraction and figuration, brute force and refinement. Often I catch my subjects from the corner of my eye: roadkill, brightly colored tramp rags set off against the marble architecture in a station hall, the quivering broken screen of a security camera in a countryside bus, a crate of beer with a drunk double vision, the flickering of a dying tube light, a broken mp3 player. I take subjects that linger in the periphery of my range of vision and elevate them to iconic images by putting them in the center of the composition.

Presenting a painting in a wharf cellar is a challenge. To build a white wall in such a place would be denying its existence and unique characteristics. Instead, I build a wooden construction to present the painting in, mediating the work and hijacking the space. I use these constructions at locations that are not designed for presenting visual art. Here, the wooden framework serves as the connecting element that links the work to the existing architecture. The optical interference of this construction demands the attention of the viewer and guides is towards a refuge for the eye: the painting. If the eye wanders beyond the boundaries of the painting frame, it meets the construction and loses its focus.

Als er twijfelend geschilderd is, dan oogt het beeld twijfelachtig. Wanneer er stijf en overwogen geschilderd is, voel je de moeite . Al schilderend werk ik als een houthakker. Van te voren maak ik beslissingen en verzamel wat ik nodig heb. Kleur, vorm en compositie zijn de ingrediënten. In het doen is er geen weg terug. Een enkelvoudig gebaar. In de fikse klap is er geen ruimte voor correctie. Ik blijf telkens mijn slag optimaliseren om niet in kleine gebaren te vervallen. De geschilderde voltreffers selecteer ik, die hebben bestaansrecht. De rest opnieuw voor de bijl.

PrintWhile working in the studio, choices are made directly, good or bad is decided straight after the act. Often I am reckless and ruining a good deal of it, yet this is worth it: eventually one exceptional work emerges. I’m working on a sequence of a dozen paintings at the same time, refining my technique in the painting act. I am feeling my way through my subjects by painting them. My way of handling the paint shapes the image, ís the image. Every new subject demands a new painting manner, its own specific approach of the paint.
